Dmitry Golovnin grew up and studied in Saint-Petersburg. He graduated from the Rimskiy-Korsakov music school and Conservatory, having been taught as a trumpet student by Professor Bolshiyanov Y.A., and received a good education.

After graduating from the Conservatory, Dmitry became the Principal Trumpeter in the Symphony Orchestra of the Glinka Capella in Saint-Petersburg, a probationer of the wind and brass ensemble of the Mariinskiy Theatre, and a member of Neva Brass Quintet.
While working in the Mariinsky Theatre, Dmitry discovered the World of Opera, and at the age of 27, he began taking his first singing lessons with Bureev S.K., a Pedagogue of Saint-Petersburg Conservatory. Since then, he has dedicated all of his spare time to singing.

In 2001, during his tour of Germany, he made acquaintance of William Workman, a Professor of Hamburg Music and Theatre High School. This meeting was crucial for the musician in choosing between singing and playing the trumpet. Dmitry became a non-resident student of the Hamburg Music and Theatre High School; he withdrew from playing his trumpet and concerned himself with singing.

After six months he successfully played his first role: the role of Boni in operetta of I.Kalman, the performance took place at the Theatre of Hamburg Music and Theatre High School. This performance was the beginning of Dmitry's theatre life. He was invited by the theatres of Hamburg and Lьbeck to play supporting roles, and at a later stage, parts of Tamino (Mozart's "The Magic Flute") and Lensky (Chaikovsky's "Eugene Onegin") have appeared in the singer's repertoire.
In addition to the lessons with Professor Workman, Dmitry takes singing lessons with outstanding singers such as Frantz Grundheber, Virgilius Noreika, and Elena Obraztsova.

The 2003-2004 season may be considered his true opera debut, when the tenor executed two significant parts: one of Don Jose, from the opera Carmen, Bizet (a festival performance in Sevilla, and at the performance of the theatre of Lubeck), and another one being Lionel, from the opera "Marta", by Flotow (performance of the theatre of Solingen).

At the present time, Dmitry Golovnin is the Principal of Mikhailovsky Theatre (Saint-Petersburg), and he collaborates with theatres of Russia and Germany as a guest artist for such parts as Pinkerton (Madame Butterfly), Alfred (La Traviatta), Lensky (Eugene Onegin), Herzog ( Rigoletto), Cavaradossi (Toska), and others.
